Quoile wins NI RIB Heats AGAIN!

Congratulations to Emma Sandford, QYC, who won the Regional finals in the 8-12 age group in Bangor on Saturday and now goes on to the National Finals in Southampton in September. Sophie Murphy QYC was second in the class. Well done both girls.

In the 12-16 class there was a lot of competition with the line up including at least four past regional winners and two National winners. Lots of nerves about. The RYA set a difficult, tight course with a particularly difficult Man overboard manouuver in the strong wind. It was David Furney BYC who won by one second from Drew Magowan from QYC. David had a good steady run and a perfect MO manoeuver. Hammy Baker was a creditable fourth in his last year in the event. Paul Magowan in his first year in this class, representing RUYC, was a good seventh out of the twelve strong field of well trained boys and girls in the class.

Seventeen competitors representing 8 yacht clubs took part in what was the strongest field to date. The general standard of driving was very good from all competitors. More information will be on the RYANI web site and the RYA National web site. www.ryani.org.uk and www.rya.org.uk (Posted 16th June 2006)

WIN ANOTHER 4.8m RIBCRAFT With 50hp Honda four-stroke Outboard on a Indespension Swing Trailer for the Club! Quoile heats will take place on Sunday 28 May 2006 at 14:00hrs Click here for details Level 2 Powerboat Course at Quoile

John Magowan intends to run a Level 2 powerboat course at QYC on 21/22/23 April. The course must be 2 days in length so there is a choice of how we organise it. I suggest Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday morning. Friday night will be a theory evening. The Instructor ratio is 1/3 so I can take 3 or 6 people. For this course I suggest members over 16 years. Anyone from the club will be capable of going direct to level 2, which is the basic powerboat course for adults. Cost is expected to be £50 including booklets, handouts and certificates. Please let me ([email protected]) know as soon as possible if you wish to take part in this course. Please let others know who might not have E Mail Thanks John

NB There will be other level 1, Level 2, Safety Boat, Intermediate and advanced courses during the year. (Posted 22nd March 2006)

The club is now an official RYA Recognised Training Centre! (Sept. 05)

Congratulations to Peter Gillespie, the Centre Principal, for pulling everything together to achieve this award. Please see http://www.rya.org.uk/Regions/NorthernIreland/tcs.asp?tcId=4189602

for more information. John Magowan is our Senior Powerboat instructor, and Gerry Reilly (from SSC) is the Senior Dinghy Instructor. More details on courses etc. will follow. If you would like to become an instructor please speak to Peter to see what is involved. For young people especially it can be a good fun way to earn money in the summertime. Firms like Sunsail are very keen to recruit instructors, if you fancy a warmer climate than we have. Just remember to train our youngsters before you go! (Posted 21st September 2005)

KEEL BOAT INSTRUCTORS CERTIFICATE

A course is being organised through the RYANI for Keel boat Instructors. This course will take place in November 2005 and will be taken by Kevin Balmer from Seaboard. Experience necessary will be some experience in keel boats, level 2 powerboat certificate and a first aid certificate. The course however is modular and the powerboat and first aid certificates can be added later. This qualification is of benefit, particularly for Squibs which are also used for 'sailability'. It could also assist the club to pull down more grants in the future.

If anyone is interested then please speak to John Magowan or directly to Eamon Masterson at RYANI. (Posted 16th September 2005)

RYA / HONDA Regional Rib Final 4th June 2005

Held in the moorings area of the Quoile Yacht Club.

Weather was reasonable warm but overcast and generally dry.  The water conditions were fairly flat. However there was a strong wind for part of the day which made the man overboard quite tricky. Click here for report (Posted 9th JUNE 2005)

STOP PRESS

PERFORMANCE NEWS

News just in.... 2 RYANI Youth Squad Laser Radial sailors have been selected for GBR Youth Squad. John Beatty EDYC Rory Murphy QYC. Congratulations to both! This is a tremendous personal achievement for both sailors and a great honour to have both clubs represented on the British Team. We wish them well. (Posted 19th April 2005)

SPRING SERIES RACE POSTPONEMENT

On Sunday 17th April several competitors contacted the club and/or the Large handicap secretary asking whether racing was taking place or not due to the weather conditions. A course inspection was carried out at 10:30 by the Race Officer and his team where rain and winds of 30kts+ were evident with much stronger gusts. With a forecast of weather worsening with winds gusting to force 10 before moderating it was decided to cancel Sunday's racing. Not an unpopular decision! The Committee have therefore decided to have two races on the last Sunday of the series on Sunday 1st May. There will be an earlier start time of 11:00 hrs with 2 races back to back. An alteration to the Sailing Instructions will be posted and competitors informed after racing on Sunday 24th April. (Posted 18th April 2005)

Just got news that Rory Murphy (and John Beatty (EDYC)) were selected for the GBR youth squad in Laser Radials. This an unbelievable achievement personally for Rory, and a testament to the club. Well Done!! (Posted 18th April 2005)

The "VOLVO RYA NI Lifeboat Challenge" is a fundraising appeal for the RNLI Safe Return Campaign. The RYA NI and the RNLI would like every Sailing Club in Northern Ireland to organise an event to raise funds for this campaign. Quoile as usual is doing the double with not one but two events at the beginning of June. On Friday night June 3rd we will have a Quiz Night at the club in aid of the Lifeboat and on Sunday June5th we have our Lifeboat Race . On the Saturday we host the finals of the Honda RIB Competition which Paul Magowan won last year. It will be a busy weekend! The Friday night Quiz will need lots of teams so start planning your team now. The Sunday Lifeboat race will be for every boat in the club. Handicaps will as usual be up for negotiation with the largest donation to the lifeboat getting no unfair advantage…. The Juniors will also have their lifeboat race with prizes provided by the RNLI. Update your calendars, personal organisers, diaries and stick something on the fridge , kitchen noticeboard or paint the cat red to remind all hands to be at the Quoile, at the Quiz and on the Water on the first weekend in June.
